Yes, you can use Uber to move furniture! In fact, many people use the app to request furniture delivery services. While Uber does not have its own furniture delivery service, it does allow you to order an Uber XL and sometimes the Uber XL driver will be willing to help . However, you should probably hire a moving team if you have a lot of furniture or boxes to move. Uber is meant for driving people from place to place but there is one way to make sure the Uber can help you move.

You can order an Uber XL and then call them right after you order it to make sure they are able to come. If they say no, you can cancel and find a different driver. If they say yes, then when they get there, you load up your furniture and driver away. Then, an Uber driver will help you deliver it to your desired location. Moving furniture is way cheaper this way but it is also less reliable than just renting a car/truck/u-haul.

If you’re looking for a cheaper, quick, and efficient way to move your furniture, Uber is a great option. Here are four reasons why:

  1. Uber is cheaper than hiring a traditional moving company.
  2. Uber is quick and easy to use – you can request a car within minutes.
  3. Uber is efficient – you can track your driver’s progress and ETA in real-time.
  4. Uber’s driver ratings system ensures that you’ll only be matched with experienced and reliable drivers.

Steps to use Uber to move furniture

  1. Download Uber app on your phone
  2. Request Uber XL (don’t request a regular Uber because it is too small)
  3. As it connects you to a driver, place a call to talk to them
  4. Ask your driver if they are able to move that specific piece of furniture
  5. If they can’t, cancel the ride and place another request
  6. If they are too close and can’t move it, have them cancel the ride so you don’t get charged
  7. Help the driver move furniture into car
  8. Drive to location
  9. Unload furniture
  10. Congrats! You used Uber to move furniture.

My experience using Uber to pick up furniture

I bought a desk on Facebook Marketplace and I don’t have a car to pick up the furniture in. I live in a city with great public transportation so I took the bus to go pick up the desk. I paid the seller and had the desk taken apart. I called an Uber XL and waited 10 minutes. When he got there, he said he would not take my furniture because he didn’t want to scratch his leather seats. So, when he cancelled the ride, Uber found a different driver for me. I used the call feature to talk to my next driver and ask if it would be ok to transport a desk in his car. He said no because he has a smaller hatchback car. So, I was able to cancel because the driver was still more than a mile away. Then, I called the third uber driver and asked. Luckily, he said yes and he was driving a soccer mom type mini van so we were able to use it to transport my desk easily. There is lot’s of room to move stuff with a mini van. The price of the trip came out to $18 in the end which is reasonable. I was going to use an app like Lug but it would have costed over $60!

Here’s what would have happened if I tried to move it with just a regular Uber lol

Tips for using Uber to move furniture

  1. Schedule your Uber in advance
If you know you’re going to need an Uber for moving purposes, it’s best to schedule it in advance. This way, you can be sure that there will be a car available when you need it, and you won’t have to worry about trying to Hail a ride while carrying all of your belongings.
  2. Make sure your Uber is large enough
When you’re scheduling your Uber for moving, be sure to choose a car that is large enough to accommodate all of your belongings. Otherwise, you may end up making multiple trips back and forth, which will not only be more expensive but will also be more of a hassle.
  3. Pack light
This one may seem obvious, but it’s worth mentioning nonetheless: try to pack light when using Uber for moving purposes. Not only will this make it easier for you to carry everything into the car, but it will also save you money since Ubers are priced based on weight.
  4. Disassemble furniture
If you can take apart your furniture, it will make it easier to fit into the car. It’s helpful to have a few small parts that fit than one big thing that doesn’t fit
  5. Tip your driver!
Last but not least, don’t forget to tip your driver! They are doing you a big favor by helping you move, so be sure to show your appreciation with a generous tip.
  6. Call driver to make sure they can handle moving furniture.
Uber XL’s are usually meant for moving people so even though it can fit up to 6 people, it may not be able to fit the furniture you are moving. Giving them a heads up saves both people time and will help you find a driver who can help.

Uber is absolutely NOT for furniture. I’m a full time Uber driver and NOT a mover. Not only can furniture damage a vehicle, it takes too long to load and unload safely. Our pay is based on distance and not time. Don’t disrespect Uber drivers by asking them to do a movers job. Also, if a passenger asks an Uber driver to cancel so they aren’t charged, I recommend the driver say ABSOLUTELY NOT. It’s not the drivers fault that you asked them to perform a service that they didn’t sign up for and you wasted their time and gas (not to mention vehicle wear and tear). The driver should wait the allotted time and collect their cancellation fee.
